History

The Acacia House Inn was built in the late 1880s as the annex of The Belmont Hotel, then one of Bar Harbor’s largest hotels. A private residence for many years, it is once again welcoming guests. The Carriage House has been converted, and now has three guest rooms with balconies.

Innkeepers Anna and Ralph arrived on MDI in the early ‘80s, met ten years later and teamed up to create the Morning Glory Cafe on Cottage Street, a small and funky breakfast place that was locally beloved. A reviewer once wrote: ”We went to eat breakfast delivered from heaven at Morning Glory.” (Providence Journal, 8/4/95).

Unlike many innkeepers who decide to quit the corporate world and move to Maine, Ralph and Anna are firmly rooted in the hospitality industry. Anna has a Professional Chef’s Diploma from the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts and spent many years catering dinner parties, weddings, and other functions in addition to helping run the Morning Glory. Ralph was the primary baker and chief bottle washer at the Morning Glory, and would occasionally get roped in to help cater the really large events. Anna is also a COA graduate. Their greatest joy has been raising their family on this beautiful island.

I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself.
